Request: Persona 4 – Aiya Rainy Day Special Mega Beef Bowl

Back in the initial days of Gourmet Gaming I made the Steak Skewers from Persona 4. It was one of my earliest requests and the first popular post that seemed to strike something within the incredible Persona fan-base. I thought it was only fair that after a slew of new requests for the Aiya Rainy Day Special Mega Beef Bowl that I repay their kindness and revisit Persona 4 as a game that’s helped make Gourmet Gaming what it is today. To be honest the thing that sold me on making this dish was the idea that this “bowl is a portal to the meat dimension”. A meat. Dimension. Let’s think about that for a moment… Do you think you have enough understanding, knowledge, courage and diligence to face this challenge?

I’ve been meaning to release the source code to Analogue for ages; sorry about taking so long! Here are a couple of notes on it:

  • Please don’t try to transform the demo version into the full version by using set_flag.nd.rpy, because it won’t work properly. There’s a lot of files missing from the demo in order to save space; it’ll crash about halfway through if you try this. Honest. (There’s easier ways to pirate it, anyway.)
  • You can use the python code portions for whatever you like. I’ve also left in the script, but only for context; please don’t interpret this as me releasing any sort of legal rights whatsoever to the writing in the game! (I apologize for even needing to say this, but… you know, lawyers.)

If you’re okay with both those things, you can download the source here. I hope you find it helpful!

thespacegoat:

• Accidentally close a tab? Ctrl+Shift+T reopens it.
• Bananas release dopamine, eat them when you’re sad.
• CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is the one handed version of CTRL+ALT+DEL
• Don’t brush your teeth hard, it makes them sensitive and removes enamel.
• Don’t like spiders? Put citronella oil on your walls and they will not go there.
• Drink one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have, you’ll get drunk without getting a hangover.
• Get clear ice cubes by boiling water before freezing it
• Heal paper cuts and immediately stop the pain with chapstick.
• If you accidentally write on your dry erase board with a permanent marker, scribble over it with a dry eraser marker to remove it.
• If your shoes smell, put them in the freezer overnight, it will kill the bacteria.
• Make bug bites stop itching with a banana peel.
• Make a paper longer with 12-point text, but 14-point periods and commas.
• Need to get around a blocked website at work? Try replacing the http:// with https://
• Never send your resume as a word file (unless asked) Instead, print it to a pdf file, it’s much cleaner and professional looking.
• Pick a flavor of gum you don’t normally chew, and chew it while studying during a test.
• Place a piece of bread in a container with your homemade cookies and  they will stay soft.
• Put a dry towel into a dryer with wet clothes, they will dry faster.
• Put toothpaste on a pimple and it will dry out.
• Practise fake smiling in the mirror every day before going to work/school, you’ll genuinely start to feel happier.
• Rub canola/olive oil on knives before cutting onions, you won’t cry, alternatively chew gum and you won’t either.
• Short on time with a wrinkled dress shirt? Hang it up in the bathroom to steam it flat.
• The night before, place things you don’t want to forget the next morning on top of your shoes.
• Use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains from clothing.
• When cleaning windows use newspapers or coffee filters instead of paper towels, they will not leave streaks.
• When microwaving bread products/pizza put a glass of water in with it, it will keep your bread for going spongy.
• When you move into a new place you’re renting, take pictures of any and all damage, then post them on facebook (privately if preferred) so you can use the reference date as proof you didn’t do it.
• When searching plane tickets online delete your cookies prior, prices go up when you visit a site multiple times.

My King of the Hill Rant. Texan Ideological Deconstruction.

reblooged:

noonereadstheurl said: Wait is that an actual rant you did and if so how can I find it

Only irl (though, I think four or five times in the last three weeks). This is also something I did in the interview for the job I won’t be getting. That was a weird fucking interview…

Anyway…. Here we go:

In sum, King of the Hill is built upon the dichotomy of traditionalist conservativism (Hank, his dad, etc.) and liberal/feminism (Peggy, etc.), and if watched through the lens of these two it seems really shallow and uninteresting. But if you look closely…

The show both overtly and subtly undermines/deconstructs this principal distinction at pretty much every turn. Hank, the “traditionalist,” although his language and actions often reflect his conservativism, also folds at key points in the show, rather than allow his friends or family to suffer (for instance, in one episode he dons drag in order to protect his mentally ill friend from ridicule). Similarly, Peggy is a strange mix of the traditional housewife and a second wave feminist.  On the one hand, she is obsessed with women’s empowerment and the like, but also (again, at key moments) turns to the traditional family/communal structure to maintain her friends and family’s well being. Luanne is similarly “contradictory,” being both the stereotype of the “dumb, PC, Liberal, white girl” but also being the most skilled mechanic on the show (traditionally “male” job) and being a fervent evangelical christian (traditionally “conservative”). I could go on and on, but this deconstruction of ideology can be found in pretty much every character of the show.

The result of this undermining/deconstruction is that the show ends up transcending both the old “reinforce the family” sitcom, and the more modern “liberal tv” stereotypes. It challenges the stiffling traditionalism of old-school america, while simultaneously reinforcing the value of family and community. It openly mocks Liberal america, while reinforcing the unique non-traditional, feminist, and “liberal” values of its characters (Bobby, with his constant challenging of gender and societal norms, basically embodies this aspect of the show). Because of this constant give-and-take, it is likely one of the least reductive shows I have ever seen. It uniquely finds a way of simultaneously challenging the restrictive and oppressive character of traditionalist value, while nonetheless drawing out the failures of liberalism which are tied to its loss of community, and perhaps even, family.

I Fucking love this show.  Go watch King of the Hill for some Texan ideological deconstruction.

Reblooged~?

babbleslime:

Character development thing.

Plot points on this chart to represent how important these different aspects of a character’s life are to them. By doing that you can help determine what type of things your character deems to be most meaningful in their life, especially compared to others aspects.

A brief explanation of each aspect is below in case you’re confused about the meaning of any.

Physical Aspects

  • Strength: to have physical power and strength
  • Sex: to have sexual gratification and satisfaction

  • Appearance: to have a good external appearance

Emotional Aspects

  • Love: to love and be loved, romantically or otherwise
  • Appreciation: to be appreciated by others
  • Attention: to be paid attention to
  • Security: to feel secure emotionally
  • Approval: to be approved by others

Social Aspects

  • Respect: to be respected
  • Friendship: to have friends
  • Intimacy: to be intimate with a partner or partners
  • Belongingness: to feel needed and belonged
  • Family: to be on good terms with/have a family

Spiritual Aspects

  • Inner peace: to be content with themselves
  • Purpose: to feel as though they are fulfilling a purpose
  • Self-sufficiency: to feel that they are able to provide for themselves
  • Growth: to feel as though they are growing and changing
  • Acceptance: to be able to accept themselves without consequence

Today I gave my students a quick presentation on some of the basic considerations for composition, which I am now sharing with you! I’ve given them separate talks about color and tonal value/contrast, which are also super important compositional concerns. (I’ll be sharing those presentations too once I properly format them)

I personally love learning about different compositional techniques. It’s fun to think about the ways that the brain views & sorts images, and how we can trick it into feeling a certain way or looking at certain aspects of an image first! It’s easy to fall into compositional ruts (which I am also guilty of) because a lot of art gets by with mediocre, though serviceable, compositions. If you can generally understand what’s happening in an image then it’s generally fine. However, it’s the truly great compositions, where everything in the whole image has been considered and ‘clicks’ together, that bump up an illustration to a visual slam dunk. NC Wyeth is one of my favorite artists for this reason: his compositions are rock solid, varied based on the image’s intent, and always enhance the mood or action he is depicting.

For extra reading, some online compositional resources that I’ve found helpful or interesting include:
Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis (download it for FREE. Such a great book all-around.)
Gurney Journey (check out the “Composition” tag, but really everything he posts is great)
The Schweitzer guide to spotting tangents
Cinemosaic (a blog by Lou Romano with some truly WONDERFUL compositions captured from various films)
Where to Put the Cow by Anita Griffin

Happy composition-ing!

One of my favourite pieces by Roger Ebert is his “Great Movies” appreciation of Spirited Away (read it in full here). At the end of the piece he details an encounter he had with Hayao Miyazaki himself, where Miyazaki defines one of the key differences between the work of Studio Ghibli and mainstream American animation. I can see his words relating to comics as well, and these words are well-worth reading for any creative and parent.

Here is the excerpt from Ebert’s piece:

I was so fortunate to meet Miyazaki at the 2002 Toronto film festival. I told him I love the “gratuitous motion” in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or sigh, or gaze at a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.

“We have a word for that in Japanese,” he said. “It’s called ‘ma.’ Emptiness. It’s there intentionally.” He clapped his hands three or four times. “The time in between my clapping is ‘ma.’ If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it’s just busyness.”

I think that helps explain why Miyazaki’s films are more absorbing than the frantic action in a lot of American animation. “The people who make the movies are scared of silence” he said, “so they want to paper and plaster it over,” he said. “They’re worried that the audience will get bored. But just because it’s 80 percent intense all the time doesn’t mean the kids are going to bless you with their concentration. What really matters is the underlying emotions—that you never let go of those.

“What my friends and I have been trying to do since the 1970’s is to try and quiet things down a little bit; don’t just bombard them with noise and distraction. And to follow the path of children’s emotions and feelings as we make a film. If you stay true to joy and astonishment and empathy you don’t have to have violence and you don’t have to have action. They’ll follow you. This is our principle.”

He said he has been amused to see a lot of animation in live-action superhero movies. “In a way, live action is becoming part of that whole soup called animation. Animation has become a word that encompasses so much, and my animation is just a little tiny dot over in the corner. It’s plenty for me.”

It’s plenty for me, too.

danceanthem:

1. Make peace with your parents. Whether you finally recognize that they actually have your best interests in mind or you forgive them for being flawed human beings, you can’t happily enter adulthood with that familial brand of resentment.

2. Kiss someone you think is out of your league; kiss models and med students and entrepreneurs with part-time lives in Dubai and don’t worry about if they’re going to call you afterward.

3. Minimize your passivity.

4. Work a service job to gain some understanding of how tipping works, how to keep your cool around assholes, how a few kind words can change someone’s day.

5. Recognize freedom as a 5:30 a.m. trip to the diner with a bunch of strangers you’ve just met.

6. Try not to beat yourself up over having obtained a ‘useless’ Bachelor’s Degree. Debt is hell, and things didn’t pan out quite like you expected, but you did get to go to college, and having a degree isn’t the worst thing in the world to have. We will figure this mess out, I think, probably; the point is you’re not worth less just because there hasn’t been an immediate pay off for going to school. Be patient, work with what you have, and remember that a lot of us are in this together.

7. If you’re employed in any capacity, open a savings account. You never know when you might be unemployed or in desperate need of getting away for a few days. Even $10 a week is $520 more a year than you would’ve had otherwise.

8. Make a habit of going outside, enjoying the light, relearning your friends, forgetting the internet.

9. Go on a 4-day, brunch-fueled bender.

10. Start a relationship with your crush by telling them that you want them. Directly. Like, look them in the face and say it to them. Say, I want you. I want to be with you.

11. Learn to say ‘no’ — to yourself. Don’t keep wearing high heels if you hate them; don’t keep smoking if you’re disgusted by the way you smell the morning after; stop wasting entire days on your couch if you’re going to complain about missing the sun.

12. Take time to revisit the places that made you who you are: the apartment you grew up in, your middle school, your hometown. These places may or may not be here forever; you definitely won’t be.

13. Find a hobby that makes being alone feel lovely and empowering and like something to look forward to.

14. Think you know yourself until you meet someone better than you.

15. Forget who you are, what your priorities are, and how a person should be.

16. Identify your fears and instead of letting them dictate your every move, find and talk to people who have overcome them. Don’t settle for experiencing .000002% of what the world has to offer because you’re afraid of getting on a plane.

17. Make a habit of cleaning up and letting go. Just because it fit at one point doesn’t mean you need to keep it forever — whether ‘it’ is your favorite pair of pants or your ex.

18. Stop hating yourself.

19. Go out and watch that movie, read that book, listen to that band you already lied about watching, reading, listening to.

20. Take advantage of health insurance while you have it.

21. Make a habit of telling people how you feel, whether it means writing a gushing fan-girl email to someone whose work you love or telling your boss why you deserve a raise.

22. Date someone who says, “I love you” first.

23. Leave the country under the premise of “finding yourself.” This will be unsuccessful. Places do not change people. Instead, do a lot of solo drinking, read a lot of books, have sex in dirty hostels, and come home when you start to miss it.

24. Suck it up and buy a Macbook Pro.

25. Quit that job that’s making you miserable, end the relationship that makes you act like a lunatic, lose the friend whose sole purpose in life is making you feel like you’re perpetually on the verge of vomiting. You’re young, you’re resilient, there are other jobs and relationships and friends if you’re patient and open.

bradofarrell:

I think all of those things are maybe less than 40% of what a person “is” and most of what a person is is how they relate to other people in conversation and how thoughtful they are and also like what they’re doing with their career and what their ambitions are and how they present themselves and how they think about other people and their relation to other people and their place in the world.

And I feel like nerd culture pretends that who you are is the media you consume and everything else about you doesn’t matter and people let their bodies and personalities and minds go to shit and they get this hivemind personality spoon fed to them from a fucking internet community and they let that control their life.

They let reddit turn them into a MRAs and they let tumblr turn them into an SJWs and they let big bang theory turn them into a faux geek. They let the most powerful media presence in their life decide the kind of personality they have and then that prevents them from adjusting their personality in a way that might make it fall outside of the template they’ve been given by the media they consume. I think that assuming the media you consume is your personality pre-empts any analysis or reflection on your own real life personality and how that affects your real life happiness and goals.

People watch High Fidelity and think it’s cool to be a jerk like Jack Black and then they do that and then no one likes them and then they’re sad that no one likes them but they don’t consider not being a jerk because they’re doing exactly what the movie said so they assume it’s everyone else’s fault and they become misanthropic.  Really any media or community or culture predicated on the idea that “everyone else is dumb and will never understand me” sort of has this built in pre-emptive defense against self-reflection and that’s really fucking disgusting.
